The CIAO! Ark

Setting Sail 23 - 27 June 2010!

imageThe Ark is being created as an exhibition space and performance platform for art works produced by children in ten partner schools across Oxfordshire. It has been designed by theatre designer Nomi Everall working in collaboration with Architecture sans Frontieres and children’s ideas have been incorporated into the design through workshops conducted in the schools by Nomi and AsF.

The Ark will include the kinds of spaces that artists and children want to create to display their work. It will be an object of beauty, with lighting and sound from clean, green power. The Ark will be situated in a ‘Sea of Troubles’ - a visual representation of what children choose to leave behind, from asthma inhalers and air fresheners to values and behaviours that they feel have contributed to environmental problems, such as greed and over consumption.
imageThe Ark is being constructed in Green Street, East Oxford at the warehouse premises of a former bookbinders. Community workshops that are running between May – June 2010 will allow people to join in with the construction of aspects of the Ark and the Sea of Troubles (find out more about these in our events programme).

The Ark will be installed and supervised by the Oxford based events management organisation, INevents, on the front lawn of Oxford University’s Museum of Natural History from 23 - 27 June 2010 as the centrepiece of a celebration of low carbon living. As well as the display of primary school children’s work, workshops, performances and other activities will animate the site for people of all ages.
